Say Hello to Your New Favorite Hair Care

Get ready to meet your new favorite hair care collection.

You guys. You know how I’ve spent the last 3+ years raving about Beautycounter’s daily shampoo and conditioner because it completely transformed my hair.

For years I couldn’t use anything besides icky dandruff shampoo. It was horrible. And I hated it. But my scalp was dry and nothing would work.

Then I was introduced to Beautycounter. Not going to lie, I was a huge skeptic. I had never been able to use any kind of shampoo besides dandruff shampoo and suddenly this was going to work for me?

Yeah, sure.

Except that it did.

And days later it was still working.

And I kept waiting for my scalp to return to ‘normal’, but it never did.

Not only that, but my hair was healthy.

I got so many compliments on my hair.

I couldn’t believe it.

And then a few months ago, Beautycounter launched 3 new hair care lines.

The skeptic came back.

How could they make this better?

Except they did.

So. Much. Better.

I decided to try the Repair & Nourish collection. I have enough volume and my hair is pretty smooth and controlled.

Oh. My. Gah.

First, the smell. I can’t describe it, but it smells SO good. And the smell lasts. Think ‘woody’ and ‘floral’.

Next, the lather. That is one thing I did miss with our daily shampoo. There was no lather. (Turns out the ‘lather’ in most products is caused by nasty toxic chemicals)

It still doesn’t take much of either product. It rinses easily. And leaves your hair feeling stronger and healthier almost immediately.

I am obsessed with the Split End Serum.

Like, obsessed, y’all.

So what makes this collection so amazing?!

It was developed to nourish dry, damaged hair. It’s formulated with antioxidant-rich bataua oil, which helps restore luster to stressed strands and California blue agave complex to hydrate within and strengthen the outside.

This set also features Beautycounter’s breakthrough PureFoam Cleansing Technology that delivers that rich lather we all love without damaging sulfates or silicones.

And did I mention that this collection is completely safe for color treated hair?

What more could you want?

Day Four

Psalm 40:1-17

1 I waited patiently for the Lord;

he inclined to me and heard my cry.

2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction,

out of the miry bog,

and set my feet upon a rock,

making my steps secure.

3 He put a new song in my mouth,

a song of praise to our God.

Many will see and fear,

and put their trust in the Lord.

4 Blessed is the man who makes

the Lord his trust,

who does not turn to the proud,

to those who go astray after a lie!

5 You have multiplied, O Lord my God,

your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;

none can compare with you!

I will proclaim and tell of them,

yet they are more than can be told.

6 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,

but you have given me an open ear.

Burnt offering and sin offering

you have not required.

8 I delight to do your will, O my God;

your law is within my heart.”

9 I have told the glad news of deliverance

in the great congregation;

behold, I have not restrained my lips,

as you know, O Lord.

10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;

I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;

I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness

from the great congregation.

11 As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain

your mercy from me;

your steadfast love and your faithfulness will

ever preserve me!

12 For evils have encompassed me

beyond number;

my iniquities have overtaken me,

and I cannot see;

they are more than the hairs of my head;

my heart fails me.

13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me!

O Lord, make haste to help me!

14 Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether

who seek to snatch away my life;

let those be turned back and brought to dishonor

who delight in my hurt!

15 Let those be appalled because of their shame

who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”

16 But may all who seek you

rejoice and be glad in you;

may those who love your salvation

say continually, “Great is the Lord!”

17 As for me, I am poor and needy,

but the Lord takes thought for me.

You are my help and my deliverer;

do not delay, O my God!

I don’t know why, but sometimes, a lot of the times, maybe even most times, He is the last place I turn to for help, guidance, and even love. Maybe you relate? I am always trying to ‘fix’ things myself. Using my own resources. So I love this Psalm today because it reiterates the truth that I can turn to Him for anything. Not only that, but that He will listen to me and deliver me from whatever troubles I have. All I have to do is shift my focus on Him. Call out to Him. And place Him above everything else. Even myself. Because just as the psalmist says, “Great is the Lord!” As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. As I was reading this psalm, the first verse struck me. It’s one of my favorites. But the more I think about it, it’s not really me waiting patiently, most of the time. I think it’s Him waiting patiently for me to call out to Him. What an amazing God we serve that He desires us to call out to Him!

Lord, thank you. Thank you for not only waiting patiently for me to call out to you, but for always being there when I do. Despite my circumstances. Lord, you are so good. Lord, help me to remember your goodness, especially during my hardships. And remind me that I am nothing without you. Lord, fill me with your Holy Spirit and help me come to you first. Lord, change my heart. Amen.

3 Easy Ways to use Glow Shimmer Oil

Well, Summer is officially over. But that doesn’t mean it’s still not time to show off that sun-kissed skin. Glow Shimmer Oil is the perfect multi-purpose essential for an easy (and safer) way to get that “just got back from vacay” look. This luxurious formula is made with nourishing jojoba, grapeseed, and sesame oils instead of potentially harmful mineral oil so you can glisten worry-free.

Here are a few tips on how to use Beautycounter’s Glow Shimmer Oil this Fall season.

1. Use It as a Highlighter

Made with just a hint of golden shimmer, this bronzing oil can be used to strategically highlight areas of your face and freshen up your look. Just shake and dab a small amount onto cheekbones, down the center of the nose, and under brow bones for extra luminosity.

2. Add a Touch to Your Hair

Along with gorgeous Fall weather may come dry, brittle hair—after all, too much time in the sun this past Summer can take a toll. The fix? Use Glow Shimmer Oil on dry areas (especially the tips) to help minimize frizz, tame flyaways, and intensify shine.

3. Give Luminosity To Any Product

Because Glow Shimmer Oil is lightweight and absorbs easily, it makes an easy mixer with other products, so you get all the radiance, without a greasy feeling. Add it to foundation for a natural-looking bronze or to body lotion for extra hydration and a subtle shine. My personal favorite? Our Baby Balm

Day Three

Psalm 34:1-22

1 I will bless the Lord at all times;

his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

2 My soul makes its boast in the Lord;

let the humble hear and be glad.

3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me,

and let us exalt his name together!

4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me

and delivered me from all my fears.

5 Those who look to him are radiant,

and their faces shall never be ashamed.

6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him

and saved him out of all his troubles.

7 The angel of the Lord encamps

around those who fear him, and delivers them.

8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!

Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

9 Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,

for those who fear him have no lack!

10 The young lions suffer want and hunger;

but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

11 Come, O children, listen to me;

I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12 What man is there who desires life

and loves many days, that he may see good?

13 Keep your tongue from evil

and your lips from speaking deceit.

14 Turn away from evil and do good;

seek peace and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous

and his ears toward their cry.

16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,

to cut off the memory of them from the earth.

17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears

and delivers them out of all their troubles.

18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted

and saves the crushed in spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,

but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

20 He keeps all his bones;

not one of them is broken.

21 Affliction will slay the wicked,

and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.

22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants;

none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

Anyone else waste time worrying? This past week has been a personal struggle for me. As a single mom, although I’m pretty sure we all do it, money and bills are always on the forefront of my mind. I even blogged about it not too long ago. And then I read this and man, these words do something to me. Because, y’all, He’s got this. He’s got every last bit of whatever version of ‘this’ you have going on in life. Maybe, the key to understanding what this means exactly is spending less time worrying and more time being completely and utterly grateful for Him. Because according to these words, we don’t have to worry. And that alone is a blessing worth celebrating.

Lord, I am completely overwhelmed by these words and your actions. Completely taken back by what you do for me. Lord, thank you. Thank you for allowing me not to worry about anything. Thank you for allowing me just to spend time loving and worshiping you. Lord, help me. Because this is not easy for me. Because I love the idea of not worrying, but Lord, I struggle. I struggle laying it at your feet. Lord, fill me with the Holy Spirit and help me to completely lean on you and to leave my worry at your feet. Lord, remind me that worrying is a choice. Help me to choose to spend my time in gratitude instead of worry. Lord, I pray these things in your name. Amen.

This week write down 1 thing that you are worried about and then ask the Holy Spirit to help you give that thing to God. To completely lay it at His feet. To give you peace that surpasses all understanding. And to take that worry from you for good.

3 Reasons Why You Should Really Care About What’s In Your Hair Products

Safety and performance aren’t usually a package deal in the world of shampoos, conditioners, and styling treatments. So-called “natural” formulas often aren’t potent enough for many hair types, and the hair products that do deliver results tend to contain some pretty questionable ingredients.

Need proof? We’ve rounded up a few surprising facts about hair care—all of which we took into consideration while developing our groundbreaking new collection of safer solutions for your scalp and strands. Once you’re in the know, you’ll never look at your lather-rinse-repeat routine the same way again.

1. Your Scalp Is Really Absorbent.

Just as your face drinks up the (hopefully safe!) actives in your serums and moisturizers, so too does your scalp soak in many of the ingredients it encounters. Yes, even the harmful ones.

That’s why our new line is filled with next-generation botanical extracts that promote all aspects of hair and skin health—and free of harmful sulfates, silicones, mineral oils, and synthetic fragrances. Think of them as a green juice for your mane.

2. Traditional Shampoos Could Be Drying Out Your Hair.

Lush shampoo lather may feel totally luxurious, but in most cases, it’s having the opposite effect on your tresses. That’s because it’s often the product of harmful chemicals like SLS, SLES, and ALS—sulfates that are known to strip your hair of its natural oils and cause irritation.

Our newest shampoos, however, are different. Each one—Volume & Shape, Smooth & Control, and Repair & Nourish—incorporates Beautycounter’s proprietary PureFoam Cleansing Technology. Derived from sugars, this innovation creates loads of lather minus the harsh additives mentioned above. Our research shows these formulas to be less irritating to the scalp than both natural and traditional shampoos, and they’re sure to leave your hair feeling fresh and clean. (Unlike lots of other “gentle,” non-foaming products.)

3. Many Conditioners Stick Around Longer Than You Want Them To.

Many times, when a conditioner makes your hair super shiny and smooth, it’s the work of silicones. Once these molecules are on your hair, they don’t want to let go—in fact, it takes 10 washes to get rid of them after just one application. (And if you condition your hair three times a week, every week? We’ll let you do the math.) They’re easy to spot because they often end in “–cone”—like dimethicone or cyclomethicone—although other common names include dimethiconol and cyclopentasiloxane.

Our new conditioners are just as effective as the conventional ones thanks to a revolutionary Blue Agave complex. It’s found in every product in our targeted hair care line and promotes thickness, elasticity and softness—all while protecting your hair from environmental stressors and stimulating circulation to the scalp. (Hello, hair growth!)

High-performance ingredients that are actually safe? Sounds like the making of a really good hair day.

With You

I will not make this tragedy about me.

I will not make it about my beliefs.

I will not make it my platform to take my stance.

Because I think that’s the problem.

The sense of self.

This pride and sense of entitlement to be right.

To be heard.

To be sure that everyone knows how we feel.

So instead, I’m going to think about you.

I’m going to let my heart break with you.

I’m going to get angry with you and not at you.

Because I will not make this tragedy about me.

But I will use it as an opportunity to stand with you.

Because every so often I try a new product that completely changes everything.

Day Two

Psalm 19: 1-14

1 The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

2 Day to day pours out speech,

and night to night reveals knowledge.

3 There is no speech, nor are there words,

whose voice is not heard.

4 Their voice goes out through all the earth,

and their words to the end of the world.

In them he has set a tent for the sun,

5 which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,

and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.

6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens,

and its circuit to the end of them,

and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect,

reviving the soul;

the testimony of the Lord is sure,

making wise the simple;

8 the precepts of the Lord are right,

rejoicing the heart;

the commandment of the Lord is pure,

enlightening the eyes;

9 the fear of the Lord is clean,

enduring forever;

the rules of the Lord are true,

and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold,

even much fine gold;

sweeter also than honey

and drippings of the honeycomb.

11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;

in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors?

Declare me innocent from hidden faults.

13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;

let them not have dominion over me!

Then I shall be blameless,

and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

be acceptable in your sight,

O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

I remember coming home two years ago to visit and driving the same roads I had driven for years, but there was something about these roads now. I could see the beauty in them. The things I had taken for granted for years. I paid attention to all the details. Every last one of them. And I remember just being in awe at His creation. The way He placed the mountains perfectly in the background as I came over the hill heading towards my parents’ house. This is the same God who loves to talk to us. Who loves to be in relationship with us. Who loves to love us. The one who made the perfect Carolina mountain landscape sees something in me worth wanting. I’ve spent enough time questioning that very idea. Asking Him ‘why’ more times than I can count. But I haven’t spent nearly enough time just thanking Him. Because it isn’t just about the view on the drive, it’s about all the details that He has tended to when it comes to me. It’s about the lost cries only He has heard at night when I’m alone and it’s just too much to bear. It’s about the moments in between the big things. The things we remember the most. Because the same God who created this gorgeous world we take for granted everyday, also listens to His children when we cry out to Him. And even when we don’t even realize we’re doing it.

Lord, thank you. Thank you for always listening. For always providing. For taking the time on someone like me. Even when I’m most undeserving and when I overlook your thoughtfulness and love. When I take it all for granted. Thank you, Lord for always being my constant. And for loving me in a way I don’t even realize I need. Lord, you are so good. Thank you for paying attention to the details. In your name we pray. Amen.

Day One

Psalm 100

1 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

2 Serve the Lord with gladness!

Come into his presence with singing!

3 Know that the Lord, he is God!

It is he who made us, and we are his;

we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,

and his courts with praise!

Give thanks to him; bless his name!

5 For the Lord is good;

his steadfast love endures forever,

and his faithfulness to all generations.

Earlier this year, I started my own ‘gratitude’ journal. A place where I can just write down all of the things I am grateful for. Because so often, I can find myself focusing on the things I don’t have. Diving head first into comparison. And it isn’t pretty. Maybe you’ve been there too. Maybe you’re there right now. But then I read these verses. Y’all, we are His. Do you know what that means?! We are simply His. I don’t care what the rest of my life looks like, this is enough to be grateful for on its own. Because He is so good. And despite how ungrateful or how undeserving we are, none of that matters because His faithful love endures forever. And that, my friends, is something to be thankful for. Despite what the rest of our circumstances may look like.

Lord, thank you. Thank you for choosing me. Lord, you are great and you are good. And I am sorry that I can sometimes forget that when I get too busy comparing myself to others. Lord, change my heart. Help me to spend more time in gratitude. Help me to always be thankful. I pray these things in your name. Amen.

Today why not start your own gratitude journal. Or if you have one already why not open it up and write some things down. Set aside some time everyday to write down just 3 things you’re thankful for. Struggling to find something to be thankful for? Ask the Holy Spirit to come and guide you. You’d be surprised at what that simple act can do.

No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Matthew 6:24

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve read that verse.

Let’s just say that I read it enough where I thought I understood it enough to just glance at it when it would come up.

Except that’s just one of the amazing things about God’s word. It’s never the same each time we read it.

We can read the same verse over and over and somehow, we still have this amazing gift to take something different from it each time.

This is why His word never fails.

So, yeah, okay, can’t serve God and money, got it.

Except that I didn’t. I don’t.

I have this amazing ability to turn anything into a little God.

From my family to my job to my prayers.

I can even turn my coffee into a little God every morning if I’m not careful.

So as I read this verse again, I replaced ‘money’ with all those other things, but something still wasn’t right.

And then it hit me.

You cannot serve both God and yourself.

It hit me straight in the gut and took my breath away.

It was never my intention to compete with God. But that’s exactly what I had been doing.

It was never any of those other things.

It was me.

It was thinking I knew better than He did.

It was thinking I was more resourceful than He was.

It was thinking that I was exactly where I was in life because of what I did to get there.

Gross, right?

Because I don’t know about you, but every time I have tried to do something on my own either one of two things happen: 1. I fall on my face. 2. I make a bigger mess than necessary.

Oh, and there is one more thing: I always come back to Him.

Have I truly been a disciple of Christ? I can’t help but wonder.

Oh man, do I love Him. I love Him so much it hurts.

But do I love myself more?

What a conviction it is to ask yourself that very question.

I was hoping to finish this blog and shout from my bed that I loved Him the most.

But as I sit here, comforted by this hot cup of coffee, I’m not sure I can say that with an honest heart.

So instead, I’m quietly asking the Holy Spirit to come into this broken heart and to make some changes.

Reluctantly, I am asking the Holy Spirit to come into my broken heart.

Because this is terrifying.

Dying to one’s self?

Choosing to trust in something you can’t even see?

Laying down all the things that bring me satisfaction and joy?

I wish I could say it was easier, but it’s not. And I can feel myself clinging on to those fleeting things.

Because for so long, even when I wasn’t acknowledging it, for so long it was up to me. At least, that’s how I looked at it.

That’s what we’re conditioned to do, right?

We grow up with the idea that if we want something we have to work for it.

That our best choices have gotten us to where we are.

And that if we aren’t happy with something we have the power to change it.

But what if that goes against everything that He is?

What if by believing those things we are giving ourselves too much credit and taking away from what He has done for us?

I hope you weren’t expecting an answer.

Because I’m drawing a blank.

And maybe this is His lesson. The thing that’s happening right now. The not knowing.

Maybe this is Him proving a point. Making His case.

Maybe, He brings us into the familiar just to show us how unfamiliar it actually is.

And how much, despite what we may think, we actually need Him.
