My Take on North Carolina Moravian Chicken Pie

First, I should let you know right from the beginning that this recipe is nowhere near as good as a true North Carolina Moravian Chicken Pie and if ever given the opportunity to eat said pie, you should. There will be no regrets, I promise.

But if you aren’t anywhere near NC then this recipe will do, and it’s not bad at all, I promise.

What you’ll need:

1lb chicken breasts
12oz Chicken Broth
1 onion
1 stalk celery
Pie Crust
Salt and Pepper


Add Chicken, broth, celery, onion, salt, and pepper to crock pot. Cook on low for 8 hours. When done shred chicken with fork. If you are using frozen pie crusts you’ll need to take out one and thaw for about 15-20 minutes. This is going to be the top of your pie. Next you’ll add the chicken into your frozen pie crust. Pour the broth from the crock pot over the chicken until moist. Discard the onion and the celery. Then add a few spoonfuls of butter on top of the chicken. Be generous. Sprinkle a little bit of flour on top and finally lay your thawed pie crust over the chicken. Press the edges. Get fancy with a fork if you want. Paint top with melted butter. Add a few holes into the center of the pie and bake at 350 degrees until golden brown (usually 15-20 minutes).
